1. c4 f5 2. g3 Nf6 3. Bg2 g6 4. Nf3 Bg7 5. O-O d6 6. d3 First unfamiliar position. I played e5 because I'm always shooting for e5 in the Leningrad. 6... e5 7. Nc3 O-O 8. e4 Na6?! 8... Nc6 is an improvement because it eliminates concerns over the b7 pawn. This move was played by Beim, who followed it up with a kingside attack. 9. h3 Kh8 10. Re1 Be6 11. Nd5 Qd7 12. Kh2 Rae8 13. b3 h6 14. Bb2 fxe4 15. dxe4 g5 16. Nd2 Rf7 17. Re2 Ref8 18. Qe1 Nh5 19. Rd1 a5 20. Nf1 Nd4 21. Bxd4 exd4 22. Qxa5 Rxf2 23. Rxf2 Rxf2 24. Rd2 Rf7 25. Qa8+ Kh7 26. Qxb7 Be5 27. Rd3 g4 28. h4 Qd8 29. Kg1 Nxg3 30. Nxg3 Qxh4 31. Nf5 Bxf5 32. exf5 Qh2+ 33. Kf1 Rxf5+ 34. Ke1 Qg1+ 0-1 Stuhlik,M (2225)-Beim,V (2570)/Graz 1996/EXT 1998 8... f4 is another interesting try. 9. gxf4 exf4 10. Bxf4 Nxe4 11. dxe4 Rxf4 Seems playable for Black, but not as good as Nc6. 9. exf5 Bxf5 10. Nh4 Bg4 11. f3 Bc8 11... Be6 doesn't work as well because after 12. f4 White is thr eatening to capture on b7, forking rook and knight. This is another reason that 8...Na6 was bad. 12. Rb1 Nc5 13. b4 Ne6 14. Ne2 c6 Played because I was concerned about b7. 14... Bd7 Better to develop the bishop. Then if 15. f4 exf4 and if 16. Bxb7 Rb8 17. Bg2 fxg3 15. Bh3 Qb6+ 16. Kh1 Nd4 17. Bxc8 Raxc8 18. Nxd4 Qxd4 Black has comp leted development but needs time to make sure his queen is safe. White can complete development by making threats against the black queen. King safety favors Black slightly because of the missing light-square bishop. Pawn structure is even, since White can readily play f4 to rid himself of his one pawn weakness. Piece activity is even. 19. Qb3 19. Qe2 Qb6 20. Be3 Qc7 19... Kh8 20. Bb2 Qb6 21. Ng2 Qc7 Black can try to restrain White's f pawn with 21... g5 but it doesn't seem to work well. 22. f4 exf4 23. gxf4 gxf4 24. Nxf4 Rce8 25. Rbe1 Now the e6 square is a real problem, and Black's king is now more exposed than White's. 22. f4 exf4 22... e4 23. dxe4 Nxe4 24. Bxg7+ Qxg7 seems like an improvement. 23. Nxf4 Rce8 24. Rbe1 Re7 25. Ne6 Qc8 26. Nxf8 Qxf8 27. Rxe7 Qxe7 28. Qd1 Nd7 29. Bxg7+ Kxg7 30. Qe1 Qg5 31. Qe8 Nf6 32. Qe7+ 1-0
