Overall: Not aggressive enough early in the opening. Awkward piece placement coming out of the opening. I think I had the right idea to play more actively in the center in response to Black’s queen-side expansion, but I didn’t execute it very well. Then I suffered a hallucination, dropping a piece and the game. But hey, it’s been six months since my last tournament game.

If I may…
5.c3 – I actually like this move. Now I know that Fritz isn’t a fan, but it would be interesting to see what your opponent would have played as I think that h6 has got to be wrong. I don’t think its something you can punish right away but I think you should be able to get initiative out of it.
7. Qe3 – this is a typical move in Scotch games, and I like it here too.
9. Nf3 – I have suffered too many times due to a f3 pawn push to ever take them lightly. I think centralizing your Knight is a good alternative. Of course could just be bad memories popping up in my head and I’m seeing ghosts.
16. I don’t get Bd4. Why not Nf1 re-routing it to d3?
23. Rde1 – hits the pawn.
Now obviously you’ve been to my blog and know that well…I suck but just wanted to give you a third party’s perspective.
Wang—Thanks for taking the time to comment. I think Fritz was fine with 5. c3. But Fritz showed me improvements at moves 7 and 8 in the line that I chose, making me more comfortable with the move I chose in the game, 5.Nxd4. 9.Nc3 looks sensible at first glance. 16.Bd4 is my attempt to deal with the threat of 16… bxa4 17. Bxa4 Rxb2.
