If you’ve taken lessons from Dan Heisman, or if you’ve followed his book recommendations, then you may have studied The Chess Tactics Workbook by Woolum. When I went through the whole book a couple of years ago, I compiled an errata list for the expanded 4th edition, 4th printing, ISBN 0-9659067-0-1.
I thought others might find the list useful, so here it is. (I didn’t triple-check everything, but hey, it’s not my book. Let me know if you see any problems.)
- p17, diagram 4, 1 Bf4 Rxa2+ 2 Kmoves Nc6. Suggest instead 1 a4 followed by 2 Bf4. Dan Heisman suggests modifying the position by adding pawns to a6 and b7.
- p43, diagram 6, alternate solution 1 Ne6+ fxe6 2 Qxg7#. Another alternate solution 1 Qh8+ Bxh8 2. Nh7#.
- p48, diagram 4, alternate solution 1 Bxa6 threatening either 2 Qc7# or 2 Qd8#
- p49, diagram 5, alternate solution 1 Rxg7+ Kxg7 (or 1 … Kh8) 2 Qxh7#
- p50, diagram 1, alternate solution 1 Qe3+ Kxa4 2 Bc2#
- p55, diagram 5, alternate solution 1 Rxc6+ Kd7 Qe6#
- p56, diagram 1, alternate solution 1 Qg6+ Kh8 Qxg7#
- p64, diagram 2, mate in 1 : 1 Bxd7#
- p64, diagram 5, mate in 1 : 1 Qe7#
- p65, diagram 2, alternate solution 1 Rge1 any Re8#
- p65, diagram 3, alternate solution 1 Rf5+ any Nf4#
- p69, diagram 3, no mate in 2. 1 Nxe6 Qf8
- p74, diagram 1, Given solution doesn’t match diagram. Solution: 1 Qe6 Qe8 2 Rh8#
- p79, diagram 5, White has two dark-squared bishops.
- p82, diagram 2, after 1 Nf6 Black has several moves that prevent mate on second move: Nf3+, Be4, Rh4
- p85, diagram 4, printed solution doesn’t make sense; one solution is 1 Ng6+ Kh7 2 Bg8#
- p89, diagram 3, mate in 1 is available: Qb5#. White has 3 knights on the board.
- p104, diagram 1, alternate solution with different idea: 1 Ba3 any 2 Kf8 any 3 Bb3#
- p108, diagram 2, 1st move in printed solution is impossible in the given position
- p111, diagram 1, printed solution doesn’t make sense; White has no Knight that can move 19 Nxg6.
- p115, diagram 4, illegal position; 2 White kings, no Black king
- p115, diagram 5, printed solution doesn’t make sense; White has no Knight for 1 Ng8+. Correction suggested by Dan: Change the knight on e7 and the pawn on h5 both from Black to White.
- p116, diagram 3, alternate solution – 1 Bxg6 Re8 2 Qxh7+ Kf8 3 Qxf7# or 1 Bxg6 fxg6 2 Rxg6+ Kf7 Rg7# or 1 Bxg6 hxg6 2 Qh8#
- p123, diagram 4, 1 Re7+ isn’t mate Bxe7

p17 – better to add two pawns a6 and b7
Thanks, Dan. I added your suggestion.
Steve, you are correct about p.115, #5. My suspected solution is to change the knight on e7 and the pawn on h5 both from Black to White. Keep up the good work!
