Playing on the edge

Here’s a position from one of my recent games on GameKnot. The position of Black’s pieces is visually quite striking.

Position after 14… Qe7-a3

Aside from his king, every Black piece sits on either the left or right edge of the board! Without looking very hard at tactics, I figured this was likely a winning position for me.

I didn’t get to prove it, though. After 15.Ne4, Black blundered away two pieces for two pawns with 15… Nxb3. I’m not sure why. Maybe a bit of chess blindness convinced him that the a-pawn was pinned?

The game went about 10 more moves before Black resigned in the face of imminent checkmate.
